I tried to use gems on my gear but my worldserver.exe crashes whenever I try to do so... Does this happen to anybody else?

I could not confirm this, it must be something related to your configuration? Are you able to post further information?
 
I'm running 5.0 currently and I am able to apply gems to my gear. Must be something wrong with your configuration like ExO said or you're missing database or world files that didn't extract correctly.
